Access All Hannah: Graphic Design, Paper Engineering & more!

With East London being the hub for all things quirky, original and creative it is no surprise that paper engineer, Hannah Kokoschla, chose East London as the place to create her designs.  Since studying Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins, Hannah has continued to focus on paper engineering by working on Freelance projects for publishing and Media companies as well as establishing an extremely successful pop-up card range. Hannah’s cards are sold at the Tate, Zandra Rhodes Fashion & Textile Museum, The House of IIlustration as well as online and numerous boutiques across London such as Indish and Lovely&British.

Access London spend the day with Hannah, finding out exactly what she gets up to.

Hannahk studioMy day starts…

My day starts early, sometimes super early at 5am if I choose to take a run, quite literally round the sites of London! Or I leap out of bed a little later with sketchbook in hand and take a long walk frequently encompassing tall buildings or anywhere I can capture  the most amazing views. London is one of my greatest inspirations – it’s wonderful to walk or run round such a vibrant and exciting city early in the morning as you really feel it belongs to you, and this is a time when I can clear my head and seek new ideas. I live minutes from Tower Bridge which is the perfect location for making the most of the city.

I start my morning…

My working day completely varies from where I start. I may pop to Atlantis in east London to stock up on art supplies, drop by my laser cutters in Hoxton to work on cutting an order, head to clients for meetings, check out the latest exhibitions or develop ideas in my studio (frequently using my sketchbook as a starting point).

My day consists of…

Everything! Designing, marketing, checking emails, meetings and Twitter! I’m a twitter addict frequently getting press and work through this social media channel. Healthy treats are also an important part to my day and I always stop for a brunch to refresh my head, this usually consists of my home-made bread and if friends or family are around it’s much more elaborate. Using any excuse to use my paper engineering skills, I often cut lettering out of newspapers or magazines creating stencils to dust spices and write messages.

From a young age I always loved playing with paper. My fascination continued during my foundation at UWE (Bristol) where I created paper sculptures and then truly developed into paper engineering whilst studying my degree at Central Saint Martins (my dissertation ended up being a giant pop-up book!) Since then, I’ve continued to follow my passion by developing a number of pop-up card ranges that are hugely successful at the Tate and working on freelance projects/consultancy work for publishing and media companies.

The best part of my day…

When I’m totally immersed in a creative project. Other than this, I always like to push myself outside of my comfort zone, the most exciting things in life happen when out of this zone.

The worst part of my day…

If a pop-up goes wrong or technology plays up.

Relaxing is important…

Calming yoga stretches are my favourite way to relax at the end of each day and reading the standard or any other newspaper is important to me to keep up-to-date with the news but again a great way to stop and relax. Of course meeting up with friends and family is always an unbeatable way to relieve any stresses of the day. And as much as I love London, it’s great to escape the city every so often and totally immerse in the depths of nature whether hiking across Dartmoor or drifting down the Mekong Delta in Vietnam.

Living in London means…

I’m always seeking out the new and unexpected, London is brilliant for this. Whether a new restaurant, cafe or bar, a new exhibition or gallery or new shops. I love fashion and it doesn’t take much to persuade me that I need yet another pair of very outrageous shoes!

yummy brunchIf I wasn’t designing, I would…

Be a baker or a patesserie chef. I’ve always been a passionate cook, wherever I travel in the world, you can always find me in local markets searching and studying new ingredients and looking for new recipes I can adapt. I particularly love bread, you can’t beat home-made bread. Both the smell and the taste are simply divine! Friends and family also all know I have a sweet tooth and will never miss a pudding from my daily meal! Although, I have to say, bizarrely I am a health freak and have a habit of somehow creating healthy sweet treats.
