Deptford has been up and coming for some time. The New York Times, back in 2009, proclaimed that Deptford was a “must-visit destination” due to its “boisterous concoction of blue-collar aesthetics and intermittent hipersterism.”
Whilst Time Out says it’s down to its “strong south London identity, and its history – clues to the area’s past as a major dockyard hub can be found around every corner”, and we couldn’t agree more. It’s an area which has seen an incredible amount of re-development and we are delighted to be a part of it.
Beginning its existence as a ford of the Ravensbourne, which is now near Deptford Bridge, along the route of the Celtic Trackway which was later developed into the medieval Watling Street.
Deptford has come a long way since it’s medieval times though; formerly home to Deptford Dockyard from the mid-16th to the late 19th Century. The last dock, Convoys Wharf, shut in 2000. Since then Deptford and surrounding areas such as New Cross and Lewisham have felt the ripples from the London property boom.
Areas such as these have become desirable places to live due to the trendy arts and music scenes, which have become popular to those close to this south east London hotspot, the brilliant access to transport in to central London and the fantastic host of local universities. The area has undoubtedly become re-developed and gentrified since a slight economic decline after the loss of the Dockyard.
In recent years there’s been a huge surge of activities to do in Deptford. Claire Saunders, Head of Lettings at Keatons Deptford branch, tells us “The Deptford Market is a fantastic place; it runs tri-weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. You’re able to get fresh fruit and veg, clothes, some local food stalls and a flea market.”
But if you don’t fancy an outside market then you’ve got a host of fantastic cafés and bars. Why not try London Velo – a bike shop café – the team at our Deptford office rate their coffee, and if you get a puncture in your bike and need a repair you’ll get a free coffee too!
If you’re off dairy and looking to stick to a vegan and vegetarian coffee then The Waiting Room is perfect for you. This “veggie & vegan coffee bar” was voted Best Coffee Shop in Deptford in the Time Out Love Awards too. You’ll be sure to enjoy!
When you want something a little stronger head to The Job Centre, “it’s literally a refurbished job centre with a really cool, trendy feel to it”. Located on Deptford High Street just moments from the station. Serving up seasonal British food with dishes like Grilled Halloumi, Thai Aubergine and Mango Salsa Chutney or perhaps Crispy Squid, smacked cucumber and sea greens – alongside an ample cocktail menu. The Job Centre is the place to be!
For something a bit more novel – head to Little Nans Bar on Deptford High Street. We’ve previously reviewed one of their first places on Curtain Road and love it. Think cocktails in novelty teapots, disco fries, lots of tea, delicious cakes and the perfect place to spend hours lounging.
