Glasshouse Salon is “part of the creative community at Netil House” and recently popped up on Access London’s East London radar. Glasshouse Salon is located near the fashionable London Fields in the creative hub that is Netil House. Known for housing some of the most creative people in London, it’s no surprise that Glasshouse Salon chose here to reside.
I walk into the salon on a miserable Friday afternoon and on first impressions the salon is trendy but not disarmingly so. It fits the criteria of a cool, East London loft apartment with its exposed brick walls, exposed ventilation system and monochrome décor. The wooden, school-like furniture gives it a somewhat familiar feel. The pink hanging lights over the make-up counter have to be a personal favourite!
It’s hard to ignore the relaxed and chilled vibe – in my eyes this is the perfect way to spend a Friday afternoon.
Not long after I am greeted by Anna, who is a senior stylist who has been at Glasshouse Salon for upwards of two years. I knew immediately as I admired her chic, edgy bob with pink tresses that I was in safe hands.
Armed only with a Pinterest board of various hairstyles and colours I wanted to replicate, I was a little dubious of how it would turn out. Anna, despite my brief description, appeared to know exactly what I wanted. She recommends the balayage for my hair and the style I am looking for; a subtle blend of the original colour with lighter tones throughout the ends. Normally I feel a little anxious in the hairdressers – I feel anything but in Anna’s capable hands however.
Glasshouse Salon specialise in using organic products to colour hair, and treat it, which means that it isn’t as harsh as other dyes leaving behind less damage. Before the dying process is underway, Anna does a protein test of my hair; it’s slightly lacking in protein. She reassures me that once the treatment is complete, this won’t be the case – and I trust her!
She gets to work and throughout the appointment talks me through everything; she is exceptional with both her manner and knowledge. We also discuss the cut – only a small amount off the ends and a little bit of shaping. Anna listens to exactly what I want which is reassuring as sometimes I’ve felt, in the past, you are promised one thing and given another.
While the dye is on I notice the salon is filled with 5-6 other customers, all chatting away in the same familiarity Anna addresses me with. There is also a healthy mix of males and females; it appears to be a salon for all.
It’s time for the dye to come off and Anna again talks me through all the treatments. She begins just washing off the dye, adds a toner to remove any brassy tones and continues to shampoo. All products used are organic and smell incredible.
In-between shampooing and conditioning, Anna recommends an Organic Colour Systems protein based treatment which will help to build the condition of my hair and reduce the breakage. Forever on the quest to have healthy hair – I happily oblige!
Anna begins to cut my hair – taking off a small amount, as requested, and adding some shape. I am heading out that evening but want a sleek style which can transition from the afternoon to the evening with ease. She suggests a slightly messy, straight bob with volume below showing off the new colour.
Once again I find myself taking her advice and oblige to this style.
The salon closes at 6pm, and despite it passing 6pm I never once feel rushed by Anna to get out of the salon. She takes her time styling my hair and even after talks me through how is best to maintain the colour and continue to boost the protein levels.
She shows me my hair – it’s a huge change from my original dark brown tresses but needless to say, I love it. It looks natural, healthy and perfect for the warmer months ahead!
I have already booked my second appointment at Glasshouse Salon with Anna, and as we all know finding the perfect colourist is hard – but I think I may have just found mine!
